Katrina Rojas - Assignment #2
This group presentation on the electoral process enriched me beyond expectations and expanded my learning of this critical subject by leaps and bounds. My involvement in the electoral process deepened not only my knowledge of democracy but also gave me the chance to work with a talented team of colleagues. Now that this work is done, our group was much better organized this time around compared to our last presentation. Coupled with this improved framework came the enthusiasm from all members of the group, proving critical to our overall presentation success.
One of the major factors that typically characterized our approach this time was in stress on the organization. In our last presentation, we faced some problems as relates to time management and coherence. Those experiences taught us valuable lessons, and this time we made a conscious act of trying to ensure that we had clear roles and timelines from the outset. As preparation for this, we held our first meeting to discuss what each one does best and his interests. The initial talk was the key since it helped us to give topics to each member according to his abilities and interests.
I was in a position to delve deep into the historical context of the type of people in the electoral process, while my fellow group members focused on other valuable issues, such as the rights of voters, the place of technology in determining election results, and civic duties concerning voting. The division of labor helped us conduct more in-depth research on our various topics, and it engendered a sense of ownership in each group member, which further motivated us to be proud of what we were doing.
To further facilitate our collaboration, we developed a shared timeline that included deadlines for drafts and practice sessions. We also set up rules of checking in with each other regarding progress along the way, which proved to be very helpful in keeping us on track yet allowed us to catch things that might get in the way or be called into question. We employed shared documents and group chats, two great collaboration tools that made communication and the sharing of ideas quite easy to do. All that translated into a smoother workflow and significantly reduced last-minute stress.
The highlight of it all was the research I did on my topic. The process was complex and steeped in history, vastly broadening my understanding of the various types of electoral systems that different nations offer regarding democracy. More important, it provided a clear basis of understanding about historical context to appreciate ongoing voter challenges and the value of advocacy to promote fair electoral practices.
As the time to present approached, I felt confident yet excited. Each member presented his or her section in turn, logically building upon one another's ideas and remaining coherent throughout the presentation. I added some captivating visuals to my section and some historical anecdotes with a bit of humor to appeal to the audience. The positive feedback that we got from our peers reinforced our organizational efforts and how well we had worked together.
Apart from my research, I learned a lot from the presentations of my classmates. Each group used a different approach to the election; thus, the learning would really be varied. One group tackled voter suppression, not only by presenting informative statistics but also by real-life examples that have evidenced this ongoing problem within our electoral systems. Their presentation raised important conversations about the need for much advocacy and reform in how many citizens still struggle to exercise this right. By the end of the session, I had a better understanding of these salient issues, and it furthered my appreciation of the intricacies involved in the process of elections.
Overall, I very much enjoyed working on my part of the presentation about the electoral process. The better organization and cooperation within our group made the project not only more fun but also yielded a higher-quality presentation. My classmates' presentations constituted, in and of themselves, learning experiences; their insight and perspectives shed light on aspects of the electoral process that I had never before considered.
The interplay between individual research and effective group collaboration significantly facilitated my learning about the electoral process. I am very grateful for this learning opportunity, both from my group and my classmates. In any case, valuable lessons were learned from this experience which will impact on my future academic pursuits. Herein, I do realize that effective teamwork, combined with strong organizational skills, is what wonderful results can be built upon.
More than the formal process of governance, it remains one of the most relevant areas of study that invites debate and calls for further explanation. Any person who is concerned about democratic health must have an understanding of the intricacies involved in electoral systems. I really look forward to putting into practice everything I learned in future discussions and studies, and I am confident that the skills I developed during this project will stand me in great stead as I press further on my academic journey. Thus, this project furthered my belief in the power of collaboration, organization, and the process of continuous learning. The next step will be to deeply connect with subjects that deal with the electoral process and contribute toward ongoing discourses of democracy and civic engagement. Further insight, not only knowledge-wise but also a way to become more enlightened and participatory in our democratic system, has been given by this research.
Very nice reflection!
