Karis Desrosier Assignment 1

Public speaking is an essential skill that affects many parts of our lives especially in school and work. When combined with group presentations it offers a unique learning experience, helping students develop teamwork and communication skills. These skills are not just important for academic success but are also valuable in our future careers and personal interactions.

Public speaking allows us to share ideas and persuade others. In class we use this opportunity to show our understanding of different subjects and engage our classmates. This interaction helps create a learning environment where everyone benefits from different viewpoints. Being able to express our thoughts clearly can boost confidence which is just as important in life. When we feel confident speaking in front of others, we are more likely to share our ideas and opinions.

Public speaking also encourages critical thinking. When we prepare for a presentation, we must explore our topics deeply and organize our thoughts clearly. This process enhances our understanding of the material and helps us remember it better. Analyzing information and presenting it clearly are skills that are useful both in school and in real life.

Group presentations provide a unique chance to improve our speaking skills while working together. When students collaborate we can combine our strengths share different perspectives and tackle larger projects more effectively than if we worked alone. The mix of ideas can lead to better discussions and a better understanding of the topic. However, group presentations can also be difficult because they require good communication and respect among all group members. Successful collaboration depends on everyone being on the same page which can sometimes be hard to achieve.

One major benefit of working in a group is the ability to delegate tasks according to each person's strengths. For example, if one person is great at research and another is skilled at speaking, they can focus on what they do best. This division of work not only makes the workload easier for everyone but also improves the overall quality of the group presentation. When tasks align with our strengths, we are more likely to produce high quality work and feel more engaged in the project.

Despite the advantages of group work, it can be challenging, especially when team members do not communicate effectively. Poor communication leads to misunderstandings, causing confusion about tasks and responsibilities. In some cases the group could miss important points or overlook key information, which ultimately affects the presentation's quality.

Some members might feel shy or hesitant to voice their opinions, which can create an imbalance in contributions. This lack of participation can frustrate those who are eager to engage. When only a few people do the work, it creates resentment and can affect how well the group works together. This imbalance also often leads to one or two individuals feeling overwhelmed while others contribute very little which is not a positive learning experience.

Coordinating schedules for meetings about the project can also be a challenge. If some members are unresponsive or have conflicting commitments it can hinder the group's progress. It’s essential for all members to communicate openly and work together to find meeting times that suit everyone. Using a group chat or a shared calendar can help improve coordination and ensure that everyone is on the same page.

In my experience, working with this group was difficult because of poor communication and a lack of effort from some members regarding our presentation. This added to my frustration, as I felt the team could have produced a stronger project with better engagement from everyone. The absence of communication left some members unsure about their responsibilities, which ultimately affected our teamwork.

I also struggled with the fear of presenting in front of the entire class because I am naturally shy. The thought of speaking in front of my classmates made me anxious, making the whole situation even more challenging. My fear often held me back from fully participating in the group process, as I worried about how I would perform during the presentation. This anxiety can be overwhelming and can prevent me from contributing effectively during group discussions.

To overcome this fear, I tried various techniques, such as practicing my presentation multiple times and visualizing a positive outcome. While these methods helped a bit, the anxiety still lingered. When communication within the group was lacking, my confidence dipped even further. If I felt unsure about the material or the group’s direction my shyness became more pronounced making it harder to speak up.

Despite these challenges, I learned that public speaking is a skill that can be developed over time. Each presentation is an opportunity to practice and improve. I realized that it’s normal to feel nervous; many people experience similar feelings. Understanding this made it easier for me to push through my anxiety and focus on delivering my message.

Working in groups also taught me the importance of empathy and support. By being aware of my teammates’ struggles, I could offer encouragement and understanding. For instance, if a teammate seemed unsure about their part, I would reach out and offer help. This not only built a better relationship within the group but also eased my own anxiety about presenting. Knowing I had the support of my teammates made me feel more confident.

Reflecting on this experience, I understand that effective communication and collaboration are crucial not only for presentations but for life in general. The skills we develop through public speaking and teamwork are useful in many aspects of our lives. They prepare us for future challenges in the workplace, where teamwork and clear communication are vital for success.

Public speaking and group presentations are essential parts of the educational experience. They help us grow as individuals, improve our communication skills, and learn to work effectively with others. While challenges such as poor communication and personal anxiety can arise, these experiences also offer valuable lessons in resilience and teamwork. Embracing these challenges ultimately enhances our personal and academic growth, equipping us with the skills needed for future success.

Public speaking may seem difficult but it is a pathway to growth. Each time we speak in front of others, we learn more about ourselves and how to convey our ideas. With practice patience and the right support and communication we can overcome our fears and become effective communicators. This journey not only enriches our academic lives but also prepares us for the challenges and opportunities that we may face in life.

  1. Well...not exactly a reflection of all the presentations. I do however appreciate your honesty. Very good!
