Presenting has always been an important aspect in education. Public speech demonstrates how to inform a large audience with a well-educated and practiced performance which can help listeners understand more. Subsequently, these were the driving factors for the first presentation which led to my classmates blossoming and giving incredibly great presentations. This blog post will be a general summary and review of the last presentation done regarding the most prominent and important chapters that help the reader and students understand the foundation, fundamentals, and advance tactics of presenting, and what it was like working with others and how I perceived their presentation. This blog will be compiled of my presentations information, and explain my experience with my colleagues and my experience with applying the chapter information to this public speech

Foundation

I was given chapter one which meant that I had to research the origin and the make-up of a speech. This chapter went over things such as the classical era which consisted of Platos and his students coming up with ways to better project an idea that they had. Further down the line came the industrial age and, in this era, it meant that there was more technology. In the industrial age, it was apparent that there were a lot of predecessors for early technology. Finally, the last era meant that ai would be involved as well as newer technology. This gave public speakers an advantage seeing as the audience gradually grew as the technology did. That was not all, there were certain guidelines that followed along.

My experience

This was the most informational part of my presentation because it relatable and gave a lot of content and detail to introduce. I also loved the creative part of the presentation that went into introducing things like a timeline, the graphical creativity felt amazing to be able to express what was possible through thought and innovation.

Fundamentals

There are certain things that goes into public speech. Not only can a speech be logic based, but it can reflect one's credibility and carry emotional presence throughout the project. This is known as logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is a form that you can take-up by applying things like graphs, logic, and fact-based things. When a speaker applies a graph in their presentation this is a form of logos. When speakers put statistics or numbers in their language it is also a form of logos to further portray the reality of their point. Ethos is a form of credibility. Ethos means that the speaker is credible in what he or she is saying. This means that if a person of status displays their experience it is more likely that individuals or the audience may take the speaker more seriously. For example, millionaires love to speak about their trials in tribulations whilst finding their path to a successful business. However, if someone who never created a business or never had the net worth or achieved an accomplishment as such, it would be difficult to believe that individual over the millionaire who had already experienced and followed through with their ideas. Pathos is a form of emotion that can be applied to a public speech. Pathos can be applied in an argumentative way, meaning you can touch the audience in ways such as giving your emotional experience that others may relate too. You can use this experience in an argumentative way to win them over.

Lists of Speech Rhetoric

  • Logos
    • Form of logic. You can use things such as graphs, facts, or statistics.
  • Pathos
    • Emotional approach that may touch the audience and win them over.
  • Ethos

  • A form of credibility that the speaker can use so the audience takes them more seriously.
  • My experience

My Experience to apply this information to my project would prove to be difficult considering I mostly feel like logic gives me credibility. Logic to me is the most useful since I don't have much credibility as I am also a newfound student like my colleagues. However, it was easy to apply simple graphics and timelines to get the point across and utilize some of the strategies from the chapters. I think I portrayed a decent presentation using mostly information I knew instead of restating the bullet points. I believe reading too much information off the project can be boring for the audience and less engaging. Also, using modern speech might help grasp the audience for me more. All in all, this section was duller for me because it was difficult to apply these topics.

    Team Members

I believe my team members were effective and efficient. They decided to take initiative and organize the whole presentation by chapter and to have every individual who was doing the chapter state their name and their chapter. I believe it was also well-done by all team members considering every slide had a graphic and short formed description that matched the topic in its entirety. The team members also cooperated very swiftly with no issues. After the presentation was done, I noticed that they were all knowledgeable and had used certain tactics from the chapters in their presentations. They also matched the theme of the presentation and worked off of each other like a true team.

These are the steps that were taken to ensure the efficiency while performing and working together on the project:

    • Organize chapters to find which individual will work on a chapter solely by themselves or with a partner.
    • Think of a graphic that was able to fit the overall theme and was easy to work with.
    • Read the chapters to gain knowledge to actually apply to the presentation.
    • Come together and figure out who will stream the project as well as which sections people will do.
    • Write an overall summary and have one group leader present the introduction whilst also concluding the presentation.
    • Figure out graphics for each individual section to give the audience something they are able to stick with and engage
    Conclusion
All in all, it was an interesting experience that I believe furthered my knowledge and skillset of giving public speeches. It furthered my knowledge because in order to do this presentation the knowledge would have to follow and stick with you throughout it, otherwise you would be reading off of it which is a sign that the person doesn't have much knowledge of the topic. Furthermore, there are much more to come which will increase my skillset and make public speaking simple.
